Over the next week, the only activity had been the guards, bringing food. The cell occupants just stared at the wall, listless and defeated.

Just as the guard bringing lunch left, Spottedfur heard a soft tapping. She looked over to the window, and there perched a blue jay, its beak tapping, tapping, tapping against the window frame.

Spottedfur smiled. It was as if the little bird was sending her a message.

All is not lost, it seemed to say. Don’t give up; there is hope.

Chapter 17

After about an hour, a soft tapping sound was heard again. Spottedfur raced to the window, and there was a blue jay, only with a really sharp rock. The bird tapped and tapped the window frame with the rock until the frame collapsed. It was now big enough to fit through.

“Thank you, thank you, little bird!” she muttered. “Saphi, come on!” The leopards leaped out of the window, and they were back at camp before their captors noticed.

After the reunions and explanations, Spottedfur retired to her cabin. She was sitting on her leaf bed, thinking about the events of the previous couple of weeks. Then, by some train of thought or another, she started thinking about why she was captured.

The leopard they had tied up had said they needed the girl who discovered their cave. As she turned this fact over and over in her mind, suddenly she came to the conclusion that was so alarming and so possible she screeched and ran to Saphi’s den.

“Saphi! Why was I captured? Was I captured because I knew the location of the cave, and never actually told anyone where it was? What if Windwarrior has a secret passage to the cave, and then they could come and attack us!”

This rant came flying out of Spottedfur’s mouth as soon as she stepped into Saphi’s den.

“Whoa, hold up, Spottedfur. What’s going on? Tell me again.”

So, Spottedfur explained the whole theory to her again, more slowly this time, and Saphi’s face grew paler with each word. When she finished, Saphi darted outside and called a clan meeting.

“We have discovered a… troubling occurrence. The hollow in which our hero Spottedfur discovered,” Saphi continued, but to Spotttedfur, her voice seemed muted somehow. Hero? They all thought she was a hero? She thought back to her first day when Saphi made fun of her for being the only Wildfire cat, and she knew she would prove herself. She just had.

When she was tuned back in, Saphi was saying, “…We as a clan will get through this. We may have started as a ragtag group of mixed clans, but now we are no mixed group. We are Survivors! We will need big watches set on the hollow at all times, and we will need blacksmiths working from dawn to dusk until we have all the weapons. Any questions?”

“Uh, we only have one blacksmith, and he’s an elder!” Someone called out, and the crowd parted to reveal a leopard with more silver hairs than black or gold.

“Right…” Saphi
